Sleep Cheap is back

The dates are now official. Circle Nov. 15-18 on the calendar if you want to Sleep Cheap.

However, don't wait too long to make those reservations because the hotels that are participating in this year's Sleep Cheap Charities Reap promotional event fill up quickly.

Hotel rooms will become available for booking starting at 7 a.m., on Monday.


"We have a real nice collective mix of properties scattered throughout the city," said Jim Diodati, who came up with the idea six years ago and has watched it grow into a huge success.

Over the last five years, Sleep Cheap has raised more than $700,000 for local charities, without any expenses coming out of the event.

"We have 28 properties. That includes all the major hotels and all three of the water parks, which is key, especially for the families," said Diodati.

"We have every Fallsview hotel and some unique places along River Rd. and other parts of the city."

As in the past, hotels offer their rooms to Niagara region residents only.

Room rates are $35 per night for a standard room, $45 for a Fallsview room, $65 for a whirlpool room and $85 for a water park access room. All room rates include parking and there are no hidden costs.

"None of this would be possible if it wasn't for the generous hotel operators in Niagara Falls," said Diodati. "We have over 5,000 rooms confirmed and it all depends on what you are looking for. Some people are looking for a view, some are looking for a quiet retreat and others might be looking for a family experience."

He gets calls from people around the region wanting to know the dates and what hotels are participating because that's when some of them actually book time off work or plan their vacation around it.

"It's very affordable. It's a lot of fun and it's a feel-good event because of the charitable benefit.

"In November, there's not a lot to do and you get a chance to experience world-class amenities just 10 minutes from your front door," said Diodati.

This year, 50% of the proceeds will go to the charity that the individual hotel determines they want it to go to and the other 50% goes to the Sleep Cheap committee to split half for Niagara Community Foundation and the other half to charities that apply for the funds.

Diodati said it was felt that this would be empowering for staff to be able to select their favourite charity.

He is confident the event will raise more than $100,000 and in the next few years they should reach the $1-million mark.

The event has been so successful that other communities, such as Niagara-on-the-Lake, have tried it with their bed-and-breakfast operators.

"This is a win-win situation for everyone that's involved and I'm extremely humbled by the successes that Sleep Cheap has had because I had no idea it was going to fly the way it did," said Diodati.
